Essay by Jiri (806) from Czech Republic - Author's age: 22 years old

Summary

This essay is trying to comprehend today’s situation. It shows the complexity of that situation on the recent examples of the oil prices development and the global warming problem. The author thinks based on those too topics that making serious statement and policy is too controversial and he sees living on the edge as just another part of human nature. Thus the only way of improving society’s well-being is changing in people’s thinking which could prevent wasting important resources.

When I read the summary to your essay I was led to believe you would not reach any solutions, and I am afraid I believe you haven't. I am very sceptical of some of the statements you make (such as climate change as a questionable concept, rather than simple physics). I think you have overlooked the power and usefulness of many of the scientific predictions made, about oil and other impending catastrophies, because these warn us of what will happen if we do not change, and guide us to making changes.

You state "it is not our planet whose fate is at stake" but this is entirely what is at stake. Yes, humans will be aradicated if change does not occur, but I get the impression you're questionning the degree to which our actions are bad or terrible, rather than accepting that they are not good.
