Summary

The world today is faced with food and energy crisis and the buzz word for every person or country now is sustainable development. There are beautiful structures, policies and documents detailing out what can be done but what the main driving force for these is the human race. This means that the human race is the main instrument to be tackled and once that is changed all the other machinery will work perfectly. What do I mean, until I see the greed and selfishness kicked out of the today’s human race, then I do not foresee sustainability in anything whether food, energy or climate change. Hence, rich and poor people, rich countries and poor countries must have a common interest for sustainability in food and energy production and management.

Amos I completely agree that it is disheartening to see what is going on in the world, especially if one has been able to first hand. Nevertheless, I think that we need concrete, almost boring, technical bureaucratic policy changes and advances in technology in addition to decentralized approaches to food and energy production and consumption, rather than holding hands and wishing for the evils of the world to go away. I think it is too simplistic to say that humans are just selfish and that is the main cause of the current international dilemmas. I think that civilisation and humanity's actions are much too complex to be pinned down by one thing.

Amos, I must commend you for the foresight and determination to touch on issues that matter but which are hardly said or considered for any meaningful sustainable progress. Indeed, the current global troubles and problems are the results of either direct or indirect acts or inactions of man with greed and selfishness being the most deadly. World leaders and policy-makers and indeed all human race should begin to consider the cause-effect relations of these twin words you confidently and prophetically touched on in your essay. It might sound impossible to think that greed and selfishness cannot be, but to say the least they are worth looking into and considering in our quest to achieving food and energy security and of course meaningful livelihood.
